Say Yes to the Dress: Goth Edition
May. 14th, 2018 08:09 amThere's this ridiculous show on TLC called "say yes to the dress". Essentially, the show features young brides with extravagant expectations and they try on different dressed and squeal when they find the right one. it's completely moronic but then again, the one time I thought i was going to get married, I found my dress at a thrift store for $25 so what do I know
Yesterday, I finally decided it was time to buy some new clothes, and was desperately in need new bras (story of my life LOL)
Was not looking forward to this for 2 reasons: spring and summer fashions tend to be billowy and in colors I don't like, and trying on clothes all day is exhausting. Also, I only had $100 to spend and that doesn't get you very far. Thankfully, we have a shopping center that has both a Savers and a TJMaxx right next to each other.
For a heavy duty shopping trip I just wear leggings with a cotton dress or big tshirt with no makeup because it's just easier not to to deal with buttons, earrings, or makeup possibly getting ruined when you are in and out of the dressing rooms for several hours.
However, on that day I decided that a little magick was in order.
I was looking for a few very specific items, and decided to wear the closest things I had in my closet in hopes of attracting what I wanted.
The whole nu goth style is still mega popular now. And while I like the idea of looking "witchy", the whole thing is too modern for me. Plus, all the shirts with occult symbols on them just scream of a teenage tumblr "pay attention to meeee!!!" aesthetic
My idea of a dark witch look is more Gothic and romantic, like being in a moonlit garden on Midsummer Eve in New Orleans surrounded by old statuary and the scent of jasmine in the air. Add in some touches of 20s/30s styles with 80s trad goth and that's pretty much the look I was going for.
So I'm browsing through the juniors section and this girl is looking for a prom dress with her mom, who pulls out a dress that has a black lace bustier style top with a hi-low asymmetrical purple skirt. And the purple is that nice Halloween purple-not royal purple, not neon purple or lavender. Halloween purple. You know what I'm talking about :P
Anyway, the daughter's response is "Ugh no. This isn't Monster High, mom!" And then they both glance over at me. Our eyes meet, and the mom is awkwardly holding out the dress in my direction, as if she wanted to suggest it to me but didn't want to me rude
"I think I need to try this on", we all laugh and mom hands me the dress
Not only did it fit perfectly, it was only $12 and it will look nice with a variety of shoes or boots. I definitely had my squeee! moment in the dressing room :D
I found 2 amazing pairs of boots, 2 dresses, 3 skirts, 2 scarves, earrings, a necklace, a belt, 2 tops and 2 sweaters, plus some nice Kat von D lipsticks at TJMaxx for a deep discount. Everything was exactly what I wanted.
Magic FTW!
